Mindful Eating: The Key to Weight Loss

One common misconception about mindful eating is that the practice involves just simply chewing your food a bit slower. However, mindful eating is actually guidelines to help you pay more attention to how and what you are eating on a daily basis.  

During your weight loss journey, you’re likely tracking your food intake, so you are aware. However, you can catapult your progress by adopting mindful eating to change not only your tracking habits and awareness, but also help you to know your body’s cues to help you make better choices when eating.  

Mindful Eating: Defined 

To put it simply, mindful eating is the process of becoming aware of your food selection and preparation, based on what you feel is right.  

In addition, mindful eating involves:  

  • Accessing your senses to choose food that both helps nourish your body and satisfy you 
  • Realizing hunger cues that help guide your decisions when it’s time to eat 

When you are eating mindfully, it’s not a matter of right or wrong. Mindful eating is more about becoming aware of how foods affect your body physically and mentally. For instance, while you may enjoy eating salty or sweet foods, if you’re a mindful eater, you recognize that you may feel bloated or even edgy afterward. You begin to recognize that the foods you crave are not necessarily the best for your mental and physical health.  

Benefits of Mindful Eating 

When you adopt the practice of mindful eating, you begin to recognize that your eating experiences are unique. While a particular meal or even food item is appealing and appropriate for another individual, it may not be the best choice for you.  

As a mindful eater, you also gain control over your food choices. You savor the food and investigate its origin. For instance, before you even take a bite, think about how the food or meal will help you and aid in your weight loss journey or quest to adopt a healthy lifestyle. You trust your inner wisdom and listen to your body with every meal.
